As a former queen, a coach of queens, and as a queen judge, I notice a common trend when interviewing and listening to impromptu questions.  Many girls feel that the judge is looking for a specific answer when asking a question that has more than one side to it.  (i.e. How do you feel about horse slaughter?)  This is a myth!  When asking controversial questions state how you really feel about something and avoid the “canned answer.”  Your personality will shine through!

It can also be called “riding the fence.”  An example of something like this would be “I think that it is important for rodeo contestants to wear helmets to protect themselves but I also believe that it might hinder their performance.” After hearing this type of answer a judge has learned nothing about the girl’s personality and how she really FEELS about mandatory helmets in rodeo.

Everyone has the same problem at some point and for good reason.  It is hard to share how you really feel if the subject is extremely controversial, political, or sensitive.  Let the judges know that you have thought about both sides and you understand why one person might feel this way (insert opposite opinion here) but you feel this way (insert your opinion here) and tell them why.  You might be surprised by the reaction you get.  Even if the judge does not agree with your opinion it shows that you have thought about the issue and you can form an intelligent view.  For your next interview or practice interview work on this!  Pick a side and stick to it, don’t be wishy-washy!  You will show outstanding confidence and really stand out from the other girls if you can accomplish this!
