…but not too different!
When I was a rodeo queen I tried hard not to blend in with the crowd. I think, to a point, every girl has the same thought as I did - stand out, but in a good way! Going back the trends and what is “in” a lot girls thing that if it is the trend…they should do it, without thinking whether or not that trend looks good on them or not.
There are certain designers that have been used a lot lately. Think ahead and look down the unbeaten path. There are a lot of designers out there that are good but are not used so much. You can also look into buying the AB rhinestones (you can get them wholesale from some places) and rhinestone the heck out of your plane old Wrangler shirt or a colorful blazer. One of my favorite outfits was worn by a girl that had a long sleeved, button up shirt; all she did was outline the figures on the shirt with high quality rhinestones. There must have been thousands of rhinestones on the shirt but it really stood out. She ended up wearing the shirt for an event at the Miss Rodeo America pageant and it look so different she really stood out — in a good way. Take my hat in the photo below for instance, when I first wore it I was a little nervous about the feedback I would get. The crystals on the brim are beautiful but they are black, contrasting completely the base color of the hat. I designed it with the thought I could wear just about anything with it. Well it’s hard to find a picture of me without this hat on during my reign. It was donated by a Double H hats in Darby, MT. There were a lot of rodeo queens and others ask about my hat every time I wore it! Mr. Jimmy Harrison received good advertising from me wearing my different - but really cool - hat!

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackI think a Queen contest is very demeaning to woman. It saddens me that in the year 2008 we are still having a beauty contest in the sport of rodeo. Really is rodeo about fashion? I don’t think so. In my view a queen contest is nothing more than bunch of men judging young girls like judges at a cattle show. . Women work hard to be held at a level playing field in all aspects of life its time rodeo caught up.

I will be sure to make a post about this but…If this is the way you feel I welcome you to attend any state, national, or even local rodeo queen pageants. Upon attending you will find these young ladies are beautiful but the represent much more than that. They are educated, smart, and informed about rodeo. They are the spokesperson for your rodeo. The meet the public and promote rodeo when the announcer, rodeo clown, and contestants are preparing for the rodeo. Please check back later for a post about your comment. Thank you for visiting the blog!

The fact that there is a beatifull, educated girl representing rodeo is not my problem. I have an issue with how this person is chosen. I think from now on all women applying for any job should have to parade in front of a group of judges and the public.Spend thousands of dollars on clothes and hair.Possibly get publically humilliated and judged. This is ridiculous. If you were applying for a job at of bank they wouldn’t ask to dress up and parade in front of the board of directors of the bank to let them judge you.

Please read my recent posts about the explanation of the categories these smart and beautiful young women are judged upon. I would encourage you to speak with someone who has actually judged a queen contest, you will find the ladies are rarely (I have yet to see a girl) humiliated. Yes they are publically judged. This is something they must become accustomed to because as rodeo queens, the public looks to them as role models. If you are a applying for a job at a bank you are also being judged and if you aren’t getting dressed up for that job — you probably won’t be getting or keeping that job for very long.
