Everyone has had to deal with it: that feeling in your stomach before a big speech, trying to calm your shaking hands before that interview. It’s a normal feeling to be apprehensive, nervous, even nauseous for some people. It’s all how we choose to handle - and overcome these feelings. It can be done!
“The secret to success is being able to put your fears and anxieties aside and ready your mind for the task at hand.” You must learn what it takes to calm the fears and anxieties within you. Everyone has these type of feelings, so don’t think the person you are competing against isn’t feeling the same as you! In order to combat these feelings find a routine, something that you can do if you get the feeling of being nervous. What do you need to do to find a calm place? Much research has gone into the power of calm breathing. Attend a yoga or pilates class to learn the fundamentals of breathing from the core. Try it! You would be AMAZED at what you can accomplish.
Competing is social; before you are compete, try and courteously remove yourself from other people so you can concentrate. Others will understand if you politely tell them you are up in a few minutes and need to “get ready.” Start developing these mental habits as much as possible in order to adapt to your new routine. When practicing your speech, also practice what you are going to do prior to competing to prepare yourself and help calm those nerves.
When it is all said and done - good or bad - don’t be too hard on yourself. By being hard on yourself you are tearing at your own self confidence. Figure out what you can do better the next time and focus on the things that you did really well!
