Revolution Ropes:  What Exactly Are They?

The generation of the i-pod, TiVo, and high definition are fast upon us.  It seems that roping is not excluded from today’s technology.  Most people involved in team roping, no matter what association, have most likely heard about revolution ropes.  When every hundredth of a second counts in the competitive world of team roping, many are open to new lines of thinking. Engineer and team roper Sandy Stephens of Prosper, TX has come up with a rope that he claims can help you control your swing and release, as well as escalating your action and range.

The Revolution Rope has a weighted tip.  The notion of weighting the tip of a rope has been around for at least 20 years. There were even weighted tip heeling ropes made in the 80’s. This rope has its weight positioned at the tip and leading edge of the loop, where the force of the added weight is multiplied. Revolution Ropes took this concept and found the exact weight and position on the tip  to place it- without weighing down the full length of rope. This weight on the tip is not excessive- it actually weighs less than an ounce.  The total weight of a 3-strand Revolution Rope loop weighs less than a regular 4-strand loop.

I have inquired about this rope from a number of team ropers and the idea is still on shaky ground.  Those who have tried it say it has a different feel that would take a lot of practice to get used to.  To go off the beaten path and try something new when you have been roping with the same products your whole life is uncomfortable.  It seems that the numbers of users is definitely low- but on the rise.  Most I spoke with had tried out the rope, but never used it competitively.  It will be interesting to see if Revolution Ropes are merely a high-tech gadget that never catches fire in the world of professional rodeo, or a step to a more “technologically advanced” sport the doesn’t discriminate against new products.  Keep an eye on weighted tip ropes- they may soon be a permanent fixture in team roping.
